Influenza Updates - 2020 season

Please note that due to unprecedented demand, we are unable to increase your flu doses on any existing orders. We can only reduce your volumes or you must place a new order.

If you require additional stock, you must place a new order. Please do this online and try not call as our call centre is experiencing long delays.

This new order will be at the in-season price and not at the pre-season price. For us to possibly get more stock, our buy price has gone up significantly and therefore we cannot hold pre-season pricing for new orders.

We also cannot guarantee that the new order will be fulfilled at this stage but your best chance is to place a new order that will go onto back order as we try to source more stock.

Please read below for information regarding your favourite Influenza brands and the 2020 Influenza Season.

The Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee (AIVC) met at TGA, Canberra, on Wednesday 9th October 2019, to recommend influenza viruses to be used in the composition of the influenza vaccines for 2020. During this meeting, the expert committee reviewed and evaluated data related to epidemiology, antigenic and genetic characteristics of recent influenza isolates circulating in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere, serological responses to 2018-2019 vaccines, and the availability of candidate vaccines viruses and reagents.

2020 Composition of Influenza vaccine

The committee recommended that the following viruses be used for influenza vaccines in the 2020 southern hemisphere influenza season:

Egg based Quadrivalent influenza vaccines:

·       an A/Brisbane/02/2018 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;

·       an A/South Australia/34/2019 (H3N2)-like virus;

·       a B/Washington/02/2019-like (B/Victoria lineage) virus; and

·       a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like (B/Yamagata lineage) virus.

The AIVC recommendation for the composition of influenza vaccines for Australia in 2020 introduces a new A (H1N1) like virus strain, a new A (H3N2) like virus strain and new strain for the B Victoria lineage when compared to the composition of the trivalent and quadrivalent vaccines for Australia in 2019.

The TGA has accepted the recommendations of the AIVC.

Timing of Influenza vaccination:

Annual influenza vaccination is recommended before the influenza season starts. Influenza circulation usually peaks between June and September in most parts of Australia.
However, influenza can occur year-round, especially in tropical areas.

People can receive influenza vaccine from the time the vaccine becomes available, typically in March or April. The exact timing can vary from year to year.

Protection is expected to last for the whole season, but optimal protection is within the first 3–4 months after vaccination. Deferring vaccination to the beginning of winter may result in greater immunity later in the season, but may also result in missed opportunities for vaccination and lack of protection if the influenza season starts early.
